“50 Years Later...Brown v. the Board of Education” will be the topic of guest speaker Nathaniel Irvin of Wake Forest University on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at Coastal Carolina University. The lecture, which is at 7 p.m. in the Wall Auditorium, is free and open to the public.

Irvin, assistant dean of the Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest, is the founder of Future Focus 2020, a nonprofit corporation designed to bring leadership and futurist thinking to urban America and minority communities. Founded in 1996, Future Focus works with groups and organizations, particularly young people, to examine social, political, economic, technological and environmental issues that are expected to have the greatest effects on urban communities by the year 2020.

As assistant dean, Irvin works to recruit minority students to Babcock. He is a partner in Irvin, Goforth and Irvin, a training and communications consulting firm, and is a former vice chancellor for development and university relations at Winston-Salem State University. He is a columnist for The Winston-Salem Journal and has written for several magazines and newspapers. Irvin is a frequent guest speaker across the country and is a regular contributor to National Public Radio’s “Weekend Edition.” He is a graduate of the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education.

Irvin earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of South Carolina and a doctorate at the University of North Texas.
