WASP comedy-drama opens at Coastal Carolina

February 14, 2005

WASP, a comedy-drama by Steve Martin, will be performed Thursday, Feb. 17 to Sunday, Feb. 20 at Coastal Carolina University.

The play will be at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday nights and at 3 and 5 p.m. Sunday in the Black Box Theater in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Admission is free, and the public is invited.

WASP is a one-act comedy/drama by Steve Martin that explores the traditional White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASP) culture. The plays family is not an individual family; rather it is a family whose characteristics refer to typical W.A.S.P. values. The play is set in the 1950s, perceived by the playwright as the last decade in which this culture flourished in the U.S. in its traditional form.

This production will be a play-within-a-play, according to actor/director Jason Adams. The play you're watching is the Steve Martin play, but its being televised, so there's a film crew on stage. It will have an Ed Wood style, which is a mixture of horror and fantasy and family. (Wood was an actor-writer-director-producer whose B-movies have become cult classics over the years.)

Since there is adult content, the hour-long play is not recommended for children.

Coastal students starring in the play are: Dan Morgan as the father; Krystin Mementowski as the mother; Joe Harrison as the son; Emily Bryant as the daughter; Julian Colletta, who plays multiple characters; Crissy Shuck, who plays the Voice of Reason; Adams as actor-director; and many other students in minor roles.
