Pianist Wettstein to perform at Coastal Carolina University

Pianist Shannon Wettstein will perform at Coastal Carolina University on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The concert is free and open to the public.

The recital will include works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Clara Schumann as well as contemporary composers Jeffrey Mumford and David Evan Thomas.

A founding member of the Calliope flute and piano duo and Boston's Auros Group for New Music, Wettstein has performed many new works and collaborated with composers such as Brian Ferneyhough, Chinary Ung, Roger Reynolds, Gunther Schuller and others.

An assistant professor of music at Minnesota's Bemidji State University, Wettstein has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and internationally, including New York's Lincoln Center, the Brevard Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. She is winner of the 2003 American Composers Forum-Jerome Foundation Composer Commissioning Grant, the Doris Myrtle Wood Memorial Scholarship given by the Mu Phi Epsilon International Music Fraternity, and the Merle Montgomery Doctoral grant given by the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation.

Wettstein's solo CD of music by Chopin, Berg, Brian Ferneyhough and Debussy was released in April 2003 on the Centaur label. Her recording of the music of Mark Applebaum was released in November 2003 on the Tzadik label, and a new recording, "Disciplines," was released in November 2004 on the Innova label.

Wettstein earned a master's degree of music with honors from New England Conservatory and a doctorate in musical arts from the University of California at San Diego. She earned a bachelor's degree with highest distinction from the University of Kansas. Wettstein's teachers have included Aleck Karis, Stephen Drury, Sequiera Costa, Richard Angeletti and Claude Frank.
