Immerse yourself in the Gullah culture as Aunt Pearlie Sue presents the stories and songs of the South Carolina Sea Islands in a one-woman performance on Tuesday, March 22 at 7 p.m. at Coastal Carolina University.

Stories and Songs in Gullah will be performed in Wall Auditorium by Anita Singleton- Prather. It is free and open to the public.

Aunt Pearlie Sue is the creation of Singleton-Prather, a native of the Sea Islands in Beaufort County. Based on her grandmother, Aunt Pearlie Sues character has entertained audiences with Gullah-flavored folktales for more than 10 years.

Singleton-Prather earned a bachelors degree in psychology from Howard University and a masters degree in education from the University of South Carolina. She is a veteran teacher of the Beaufort County School District. Her first recorded story, The Chicken Dinner Money, was ranked #2 on Gospel Radios Top 40 Chart during the summer of 1998.

In addition to being a storyteller, Prather is an educator, singer, actress and historian. She is the founder and a member of the musical performance group the Gullah Kinfolk. As a storyteller and singer, Prather has performed at many festivals, including the Spoleto USA international arts festival in Charleston. She appeared in the film Forrest Gump and on the ABC television program Good Morning America.
