Bankston and Yoder to perform at Coastal Carolina

March 14, 2005

Singer David Bankston and guitarist Tom Yoder will perform a concert on Monday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. The event is free and open to the public.

The concert, titled “Blame it on my Youth,” will feature songs from the American songbook and new jazz-influenced original compositions.

Bankston, associate professor of performing arts, was born and raised in southern Louisiana. After absorbing the early influences of Bob Dylan and Mose Allison, Bankston’s first success was with acoustic group Manchild, which signed to Capitol Records in the mid 1970s. After Manchild’s breakup, he spent years performing in musical theater.

Bankston has since become a music educator and is a celebrated interpreter of American popular song. His CD “Galvez Town” was named one of the “10 Best CDs of 2002” by the Myrtle Beach Sun News. Bankston has also performed extensively in opera and musical theater, including leading roles in companies such as the Houston Grand Opera, Washington Opera and New Orleans Opera. He has recently been involved in setting up the Guitars in the Classroom project in area elementary schools that provides guitar education to students and teachers alike.

Tom Yoder, an adjunct music instructor, has been performing and teaching guitar across the Southeast for the past two decades. His unique acoustic guitar style has been featured on Public Radio on “Walter Edgar’s Journal” and “All Things Considered.”
