Six students from the Department of Psychology and Sociology at Coastal Carolina University presented their research projects at the annual Carolinas Undergraduate Social Science Symposium, held this year at Francis Marion University April 21 and 22.

Sociology majors Morgan Lea Kilgore, Eshoun Talley and Carrie Ann Willis drew on semester-long projects in Susan Webb's social demography class. Their papers analyzed demographic trends and social forces in their hometowns. Morgan Lea Kilgore's "Where I Keep All My Yesterdays" examined the effects of rapid population growth and retiree migration into Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. Eshoun Talley's "Cerrado Para Negocio (Closed for Business)" traced labor force changes, immigration, the rise and fall of the automobile industry, and the beginnings of economic recovery in Morristown, Tenn. Carrie Ann Willis focused on the decline of agriculture, the loss of family farms nationally and regionally, and associated suicide rates in her study, "Daddy Won't Sell the Farm: Economic Restructuring in Florence, South Carolina."

Miranda Curry, also a sociology major, has interned this semester at Bethany Christian Services in Myrtle Beach. She presented statistics and reported her experiences in a poster session, "Social Problems Face to Face: Interning at a Pregnancy Counseling Center."

Two psychology majors presented revised versions of their projects from Joan Piroch's applied research in psychology class. Beth Mann worked with professors Linda Palm and Sara Brallier on her paper, "Predictors of College Grade Point Averages." Jennifer Blanken worked with Sara Brallier, Kerry Schwanz and Linda Palm on their ongoing study of Psychosocial and Behavioral Variables as Predictors of Academic Success. She presented a paper entitled "Social Support and Alcohol Abuse Among College Students."
