McDonald-Rice concert set for Sept. 9-10 at Coastal

Christy McDonald, former "Nashville Star" contestant, and Nashville songwriter Jesse Rice will be performing two free concerts at Coastal Carolina University.

The concerts, which are free and open to the public, will be on the Prince Lawn Friday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. The music will encompass a variety of genres from country to alternative , including to covers and originals.

Students and the public are encouraged to attend Saturday's performance, a tailgating event to celebrate the season's inaugural home football game against James Madison University. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring picnic baskets, blankets and lawn chairs.

McDonald, 29, originally of Tabor City, N.C., is the stepdaughter of Gil Hunt, the dean of the Spadoni College of Education. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina and landed her first job as an administrative assistant for Warner Brothers Records. She is well known as one of the top 10 contestants on the third season of the USA network's "Nashville Star."

Rice, 26, originally of Conway, graduated from Conway High School and earned his bachelor's degree from Furman University in Greenville. One year after graduation, Rice moved to Nashville to pursue his singing and songwriting career. He is the son of Coastal professor Nelljean Rice and the late Paul Rice, who was also a professor and a songwriter/musician.
