Coastals Lifelong Learning offers cultural courses this fall
Visiting professor Susette Graham will lead a lively discussion of lost generation authors including Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Cummings in her six-week course titled Literary Remains of the Great War. Attorney Jim Pool offers a new course on detective fiction, The Game is Afoot, in which four generations of mystery writers from Poe to Parker will be examined.
If you prefer to write your own literature, join one of several courses in memoir writing (Chip Smith at Waccamaw, Avery Keatley in Georgetown; or Jackie Boyce in Myrtle Beach and Conway). Theres also Greg Paxtons creative writing laboratory for the development of individual projects in the genre of your choice. And two one-day workshops will be offered by award-winning visiting instructors: Al Perrys How to Set Up and Run Your Own Writing Group on Oct. 15 and Janna McMahans Writing Short Stories on Nov. 12.
Three afternoon music appreciation courses begin at Waccamaw the second week of October with Harry Turners History of Rock n Roll and Beach Music on Tuesdays; Martin Milellas Joy of Opera on Wednesdays; and Philip Powells Belle Musique on Fridays. In addition to the free foreign film series held at the Waccamaw and Conway campuses on Mondays, Josette Sharwell offers her popular viewing and discussion course on Trends in Contemporary Foreign Films beginning Tuesday, Oct. 11. Michael Carters course on Jesus Goes to Hollywood looks at four cinematic visions of Christ to understand the social context for each movie, the message of each film within that context, how each interacts with religious traditions, and how viewers interact (even react) to the films. The six-week course begins Friday, Oct. 14.
