R. Grant Singleton of Myrtle Beach, a retired attorney and longtime supporter of Coastal Carolina University, has donated two of his original sculptures to the university. The works were unveiled on Saturday, Oct. 8 during Coastal’s Fall Gala, an annual fundraiser for the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Both sculptures will be on permanent display in the courtyard of the Edwards Building.

“Gentleman Jim,” a bronze bust of legendary Grand Strand golf professional and promoter Jimmy D’Angelo, was made at Brookgreen Gardens in 1999 and 2000. The sculpture received a first place award for three-dimensional works in a juried exhibition at Brookgreen.

“Chevy in a breeze,” a lifesize bronze figure of a young lady standing in a breeze with a parasol, was created in 2004 at Hallier Studios in Boone, N.C.

A native of Conway, Singleton has been creating sculptures for approximately seven years. He is also known for his portrait and landscape paintings.

Singleton has served on the board of directors of the Coastal Educational Foundation continuously since 1984, including a term as president from 2002 to 2004.

Beginning in 1957, Singleton taught courses in commercial law at Coastal for a number of years. He and his wife, the late Elizabeth “Libba” Singleton, established the R. Grant and Elizabeth G. Singleton Professorship in Teacher Education at Coastal. They also established an endowment for the establishment and maintenance of a permanent visual art collection at Coastal.

Singleton earned a juris doctor degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1949 and a master of laws degree from New York University in 1951.
