Learn to write short stories, find federal funding for your nonprofit organization or work with fiber landscapes – these three weekend workshops are being offered at Coastal Carolina University’s Waccamaw Higher Education Center in Litchfield.

Coastal’s Lifelong Learning offers the following noncredit courses taught byaward-winning professionals in their respective fields. To register, call 349-4030.

Fiber Landscapes with Judy Lilly on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11 and 12, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., $90 + materials. Landscapes don’t always have to be on canvas or paper – they can be created with a sewing machine, fabric and thread. Learn the concept of creating perspective with fibers on a two-dimensional surface by layering, applique, thread painting and machine quilting. Experiment with fabric choices and placement to create distance, hills and valleys. Using one of the instructor’s award winning designs, students will make and finish a wall quilt during this relaxing, fun-filled weekend.

Writing Short Stories with Janna McMahan at Waccamaw on Saturday, Nov. 12, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., $60. An award-winning, published author of short fiction, novels and nonfiction shares her secrets. Learn to open strong and move a short story along with substance, structure and style. Workshop covers plot, voice, character development, sense of place, dialogue and more. Learn about story cycles and how short stories can contribute to a novel. Individual story analysis is available to workshop participants for a fee (includes pre-workshop review, plus personal debriefing).

Finding Funding: Grant Basics for Nonprofits and Community Groups with Bruxanne Hein at Waccamaw on Saturday, Nov. 12, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., $125. This noncredit course offers non-profit organizations and community groups the opportunity to get an insider’s view on how to find funding for their organization and projects, and how to write and tailor a grant proposal to meet both their and the funding agency needs. This course will include how and where to look for funding, writing letters of inquiry, proposal development, budgets and proposal writing basics, and also an open question-and-answer session at the end of the class.
