CCU professors honor Einsteins achievements

Four Coastal Carolina University professors will host An Evening with Albert Einstein Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The event is free and open to the public.

The discussion is being presented to honor the centennial of Einsteins miracle year, 1905, when he published three papers that changed how we perceive time, space, matter and energy and laid the foundation for the atomic age.

Teresa Burns, chair and professor of Coastals Department of Chemistry and Physics, and professors Dennis Dinge, Saavik Ford and Barry McKernan will lead the discussion. They will talk about Einsteins personal history, the scientific consequences of the miracle year, and his legacy as a scientist, humanitarian and historical figure. Topics will include the theory of relativity, black holes, Einsteins attitude toward the development of the atomic bomb and the role his physicist-wife may have played in his discoveries.

The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and the American Institute of Physics declared 2005 the World Year of Physics, and the event is being hosted in conjunction with this worldwide celebration.

For more information, contact Teresa Burns at 349-2225.
