December 8, 2005

Two students have been chosen to share the role of drum major of the 2006 Spirit of the Chanticleer Marching Band at Coastal Carolina University.

Kyle Hughes of Shallotte, N.C., and Leigh Underhill of Hilton Head will serve as the first drum major team at Coastal Carolina University, leading the 2006 Spirit of the Chanticleer Marching Band. Drum majors are the central figures in the student leadership, morale and motivation of the band, according to James Tully, director of bands at CCU.

Hughes, a junior majoring in music, was drum major of the West Brunswick High School Band in Shallotte. He has attended Fred J. Miller drum major clinics and was formally a member of Coastal’s trumpet section. Hughes is a member of the Lambda Theta chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi where he chairs various committees.

Underhill, a junior majoring in music, was drum major of the Hilton Head High School Band. Before transferring to Coastal, she was a member of the Charleston Southern University Marching Band. She has attended drum major clinics at the University of South Carolina and was a member of Coastal’s saxophone section. She is also a member of the Lambda Theta chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi.
