Joe Rogers, former lieutenant governor of Colorado, will perform Dream Alive, a dramatic one-man tribute to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 12, in Wall Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. The Coastal Gospel Choir will perform as part of the program. The event is free and open to the public.

Now an attorney in private practice, Rogers served as lieutenant governor of Colorado from 1999 to 2003. He was both the first black lieutenant governor and the youngest lieutenant governor in the states history. In 2001 Rogers received the Trumpet Award, a national recognition of African American achievement presented by Turner Broadcasting System and its parent Time-Warner.

Prior to being elected lieutenant governor, Rogers served as general counsel to the Denver Parents Association. From 1993 to 1995 he was a staff counsel for former U.S. Sen. Hank Brown. Rogers received his law degree from Arizona State University.

Rogers first became interested in Kings writings and public speeches as a college student, when he was asked to recite the I Have A Dream speech at a church service. After leaving office, he developed the Dream Alive presentation, which includes excerpts from several of Kings best known speeches. He has given the presentation at churches, schools, colleges and universities, and corporate functions nationwide.
