Gospel Sing Out at Coastal to feature gospel groups

February 13, 2006

Coastal Carolina University’s annual Gospel Sing Out is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 19 at 4:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Featured performers for the Gospel Sing Out include Coastal Carolina University Gospel Choir, the Benedict College Gospel Choir and Christ-N-U from Columbia. The Benedict College Gospel Choir has performed for various audiences across the world including the pope, the mayor of Kaiserschlatten, Germany and most recently at the Congressional Black Caucus’ Gospel Extravaganza in Washington, D.C. They have achieved first place standings at the 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004 Black Music Caucus’ National College Gospel Choir competition.

Christ-N-U is a non-profit faith based organization, which was founded in June 2004 as a summer project for young people statewide. Currently the choir consists of 150 members; 50 of which will be performing at the Coastal event. Both choirs are under the direction of Darryl Izzard.

The event is part of Coastal’s annual African American Celebration, a series of events designed to highlight the art, history, music and theater of the African American culture. Other events are scheduled through the 2006 spring semester.
