Def Jam poet will perform at Coastal Carolina

Poet Mayda Del Valle will perform in the Wall Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University on Tuesday, March 7 at 7 p.m. The show is free and open to the public.

Del Valle is renowned for her abilities in poetry slam, the competitive art of performance poetry. She won the 2001 National Poetry Slam individual title, becoming the youngest person to ever win the competition and first woman since 1996. Del Valle has been a longtime contributor to Def Poetry Jam. She was featured on the HBO show chronicling the competition and was a member of the Tony-winning Def Poetry Jam that appeared on Broadway.

Del Valle is a Chicago native and current resident of Queens, New York. She began her writing career in high school before attending Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. She earned a bachelor’s degree in studio art in 2000. After moving to New York after graduation, Del Valle became a regular competitor in the city’s poetry slam events. She won four of her first five slams and her national title came just nine months after her first competition.
