High school math whizzes compete in annual meet at CCU

Some 267 high school students competed in the 27th annual CCU-AVX Math Contest recently on the Coastal Carolina University campus. Twenty-four South Carolina schools, one Tennessee school and one North Carolina school took part in this year's event.

High schools that competed in the 2006 contest were: A.C. Flora, Aynor, Ben Lippen, Carolina Forest, Carvers Bay, Conway, Creek Bridge, Dobyns-Bennett (Tenn.), Fairfield Central, Gooses Creek, John T. Hoggard (N.C.), Lakewood, Loris, Mullins, Myrtle Beach, Socastee, Spring Valley, Summerville, Waccamaw, Wando, Williston-Elko, Wilson, W.J. Keenan and Woodland.

School competition winners by category were:

Small schools - Level 1: Ben Lippen High School (Joshua Kim, Michelle Nations and Jonathan Hodges)

Large schools - Level 1: Dobyns-Bennett High School (Justin Harvey, James Templeton, Chris Jack)

Small schools - Level 2: Ben Lippen (David Lim, Amy Oh, Nick Williamson, You-ri Kim)

Large schools - Level 2: John T. Hoggard (John Verman, Sunny Xi, Amanda Lu)

Overall winner: Spring Valley (Harry Richmon, Asif Khan, Jessie Ge, Vladimir Plotkin)

Individual student winners were:

Michelle Nations, Ben Lippen, Second place, small schools, level 1

Brian Owens, Carvers Bay, Third place, small schools, level 1

David Lim, Waccamaw, First place, small schools, level 2

Liz Elliot, Summerville, Second place, small schools, level 2

Amy Oh, Ben Lippen, Third place, small schools, level 2

Sean Soni, A.C. Flora, First place, large schools, level 1

Camden Clements, Wando, Second place, large schools, level 1

Justin Harvey, Dobyns Bennett, Third place, large schools, level 1

John Berman, John T. Hoggard, First place, large schools, level 2

Jopseph Laurendi, Summerville, Second place, large schools, level 2

Sunny Xi , John T. Hoggard, Third place, large schools, level 2

Students in the competition were given written examinations. Level I questions were taken from Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry; Level II questions were taken from Algebra III, Geometry, Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry. Individual winners received $100 gift cards for first place, $75 gift cards for second place and $50 gift cards for third place in each category. All competing students and their sponsors received specially-designed T-shirts.
