CCU to co-present Jay Ungar and Molly Mason concert

Jay Ungar and Molly Mason will perform on April 26 at Springmaid Beach Resort Conference Center in Myrtle Beach.
Grammy award-winning folk duo Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, in concert with The Mammals, will perform on Wednesday, April 26 at 7 p.m. at the Springmaid Beach Resort Conference Center in Myrtle Beach. Tickets are $50.

Ungar and Mason are best known for their Grammy award-winning song, "Ashokan Farewell." The song was the theme song of the PBS series "The Civil War." The duo's music includes renditions of Appalachian, Cajun and Celtic fiddle tunes, Civil War classics, songs from the golden age of swing and country, waltzes and original compositions. They have appeared on "Great Performances," "Prairie Home Companion," "Soundstage" and film soundtracks including "Brother's Keeper," "Legends of the Fall" and various Ken Burns documentaries. In 2000 and 2003, the duo appeared in concert with the Long Bay Symphony at sold-out performances at Wheelwright Auditorium.

The Mammals, who describe themselves as "an experimental folk quintet from Woodstock, N.Y.," feature Ruth Ungar (Ungar's daughter), Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, Michael Merenda, Chris Merenda and Jacob Silver. They have released three CDs, including the most recent, "Departure," which feature traditional fiddle and banjo tunes combined with rock characteristics.

The concert, sponsored by the Board of Visitors of Coastal Carolina University's Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts and the Rotary Club of Myrtle Beach, will be in the Main Ballroom of the conference center. Proceeds will benefit students and programs in the Coastal's College of Humanities and Fine Arts, as well as Friendship House, a preschool for underprivileged children in Myrtle Beach.
