Coastal Carolina Theater presents play by CCU alumnus

April 24, 2006

The Coastal Carolina University Theater production of “second.” opens Wednesday, April 26 at the Edwards Black Box Theater at 7:30 p.m. and continues through Sunday, April 30. Tickets are $10 adult general admission and $5 for students under 18 and may be purchased at the Wheelwright Box Office.

The play will be performed at 7:30 p.m. nightly from Wednesday through Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 30. Parental discretion is advised.

Written by Coastal theater alumnus Neal Utterback, “second.” features an ensemble cast of eight characters, all played by CCU students. The setting is two weeks before Christmas when a car, pursued by the police, swerves on the ice and collides with an elderly woman crossing the street. A man emerges from the collected crowd, touches her bloodied head and, amazingly, she is revived. The “miracle man” disappears, but news of his healing sweeps through New York City. On the evening of the worst snowstorm in recorded history, this story links a hooker, a scientist, a doctor, a reporter and a couple of thugs - and ignites the debate between science, religion, faith, hope and belief.

Utterback will be in residence at the university through April 28, where he will conduct a playwriting/audition monologue seminar daily from 4:15 p.m. in the Edwards Black Box Theater. Interested writers may contact the theater department at 349-6469 for further information.

There will also be a staged reading of Utterback's new play, “American Western,” following Friday night's performance of "second." in the Edwards Black Box Theater. The new play reading is free and open to the public.

Sandi Shackelford is directing the play. Cast members include Kristin Mementowski, Alex Capps, Sabrina Fouts, Joe Harrison, Scott Dean, Chas Fries and Matt Hayward.
