HCHEC awards scholarships to local CCU students

The Horry County Higher Education Commission (HCHEC) has awarded scholarships to eight area high school graduates who will attend Coastal Carolina University this fall.

Each of the scholarship awards - six leadership and two visual and performing arts - provide $2,500 per academic year for up to four years to qualified Horry County students who show exemplary academic work, leadership and community service or demonstrated artistic talent.

Winning the visual and performing arts scholarship were Rachel Swindler,a Carolina Forest High School graduate who will major in musical theater, and Stephen Rullo, a North Myrtle Beach High School graduate who plans to major in art studio.

Leadership scholarships were awarded to:

Mary Purvis - a Carolina Forest High School graduate who was in the Beta Club as well as national honor societies for math, technology and English. For her community service, she participated in the Salkehatchie organization rebuilding damaged homes, visited elderly residents at nursing homes, participated in Operation Christmas Child, read stories and worked on craft projects at a local children's home, and participated in Kiwanis Club activities.

Catherine Dunn - a Conway High School graduate who held leadership roles in Coastal Carolina Chrysalis, Student Council, Key Club and Anchor Club. She also participated in the Salkehatchie organization rebuilding damaged homes and was involved in mission trips in Europe through her church.

Hayward Carter - a Carolina Forest High School graduate who was in Beta Club and the National Honor Society. He assisted with elementary school fundraisers, participated in Habitat for Humanity projects, played a leadership role in Boys State and did volunteer work with the boys' basketball team and with prom planning.

Leslie Ann Causey - a Green Sea Floyds High School graduate who was in the National Honor Society and member of the School Improvement Council. She was an intern at Green Sea Floyds Elementary School, volunteered for Relay for Life sporting events, made Easter baskets for the elderly in nursing homes, provided babysitting service for community events and helped collect gifts for Operation Christmas Child.

Victoria Spires - a Conway High School graduate who worked in student government, was a National Honor Society member, Conway Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership, Key Club and Anchor Club. She volunteered with the Salkehatchie organization, served as a Coastal Carolina Chrysalis board member and participated in the Big House Dance Team church event.

Alyson McCord - a Conway High School graduate who was in National Honor Society, Art Honor Society, Key Club and Anchor Club. She volunteered with the Children's Miracle Network telethon, helped to raise funds for the American Heart Association, spoke to elementary schools about self-worth and volunteered with Coastal Carolina Chyrsalis rebuilding homes.

The Horry County Higher Education Commission Leadership Scholarships are designed to promote service and citizenship and to recognize students for their leadership, volunteerism and academic excellence. To qualify, applicants must have earned at least a 2.5 high school grade point average through their junior year and have an established record of exemplary community service.

The Horry County Higher Education Commission Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship is designed to assist exceptionally talented Horry County seniors who plan to major in music, musical theatre, art studio or dramatic arts. This scholarship also requires a 2.5 high school grade point average and an audition or portfolio review.
