Established in 2003, Women in Philanthropy is a group of women from the community and the university whose gifts and donations are used to promote higher education through the awarding of scholarships to qualified Coastal students.

Recipients of the 2006-2007 scholarship awards are Alisha Batten, Jennifer Huber, Stephanie Hutto, Stephanie Rogers and Janet Shokal.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be undergraduates who have competed a minimum of 30 credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and must be enrolled in at least six classes. Candidates must submit a written statement expressing how the scholarship will assist their career at Coastal.

The students are:

• Alisha Batten is a senior art major of Little River with a 3.77 GPA; her goal is to become a middle or high school teacher.

• Jennifer Huber is a senior elementary education major from Loris with a 3.95 GPA; she plans to become a teacher.

• Stephanie Hutto is a sophomore music major from Myrtle Beach with a 3.4 GPA; she plans to pursue a master's degree.

• Stephanie Rogers is a senior chemistry major from Conway with a 3.98 GPA; she plans to go into medical research.

• Janet Shokal, is a senior psychology major from New Hampton, N.H., with a 3.86 GPA. She is president of Coastal's Student Government Association and plans to pursue a graduate degree in psychology with an emphasis on university administration.
