Coastal Carolina University's 2006 Coastal Summer Arts Academy will be held during June for middle and high school students interested in intensive study in music, visual arts or performing arts. The fees for the programs range from $375 to $550 and include room and board, use of campus facilities and all activities provided during the camp.

The Music Academy, which will be held June 11 to 17, will focus on vocal, band and string instruments and is open to rising 6th to 12th grade students. The fee is $375, but currently the Music Academy is taking registrations on a wait list basis only.

Tonya Propst, music education and high brass instructor at Coastal, will direct the music workshop along with Edna Grace, Lynn Auman and Patti Edwards.

Grace, band director at College Park Middle School, will direct the camp band. Auman, a violinist who performs with the Long Bay Symphony, will teach the strings portion of the academy, and Edwards, a voice professor at Coastal, will be instructing and directing the vocal students.

The Music Academy participants will present a public performance on Saturday, June 17 at 1 p.m. at Wheelwright Auditorium.

Students who enroll in the Visual Arts Academy, scheduled for June 18 to 28, will develop skills in visual communication, portfolio development and the manipulation of two and three-dimensional media. Classes will include drawing, portraiture, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and graphic design. Special events will include group projects, museum field trips, sand sculpture and art olympics. The Visual Arts Academy is still accepting registrations and is open to rising 7th to 12th grade students. The fee is $550.

Susan J. Slavik, professor of visual arts at Coastal and 2005 Art Educator of the Year, will direct the visual arts portion of the program; classes will be taught by CCU faculty, professional arts and other highly qualified educators. A culminating exhibit of student art works will be held in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery in CCU's Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts on Wednesday, July 28 from noon to 2 p.m.

The Performing Arts Academy will be held June 9 to 18 and is still accepting registrations. The program will provide classes in acting for the camera, stage movement (dance), character development, how to use proven acting techniques, monologues, group scene study, stage movement and combat, and the value of relaxation. Thom Penn, a professional actor and performing arts instructor, will direct the academy, which is open to rising 6th to 12th graders at a fee of $525.

Steve Earnest, chair of the theater department at Coastal, and Robin Stephens, CCU dance instructor, will share their expertise with this program. A public performance will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 18 in the Blackbox Theater of Edwards Humanities Building.

The Coastal Summer Arts Academy, presented by CCU's Division of Academic Outreach, has been designed to meet South Carolina criteria for programs for artistically gifted students.
