Coastal Carolina University professor Robert Bass and philosophy department chair Nils Rauhut will lead a discussion entitled "Is 'Doin' What Comes Naturally' Ethical?" on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 4:30 p.m. in room 137 of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

The event is part of the university's "Tea and Ethics" series, which is free and open to the public. Complimentary tea will be served.

The program repeats Thursday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church fellowship hall in Myrtle Beach.

This event will discuss the questions: Can living in agreement with nature be the key to living a happy and virtuous life? Can this stoic philosophy still work in today's world in light of our current understanding of nature and human beings? Has the phrase 'living in agreement with nature' lost its appeal?

Robert Bass is an assistant professor of philosophy at Coastal. He earned a bachelor's degree from Wofford College, and master's and doctorate degrees in philosophy from Bowling Green State University.

Nils Rauhut is chair of the philosophy department at Coastal. He earned a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Washington in Seattle.

The discussion is sponsored by Coastal's Jackson Family Center for Ethics and Values. The purpose of the center is to cultivate and promote awareness in the community of the importance of personal and professional integrity. The center sponsors scholarships and visiting scholars as well as public discussion forums on ethical issues in science, business, education, and the arts and humanities.
