Coastal Carolina University Theater to hold auditions

January 4, 2007

Coastal Carolina University's Department of Theater will hold auditions for the rollicking musical "Crazy for You" on Jan. 13 and 14 at Wheelwright Auditorium. Auditions are open to the community.

Signup for the audition starts at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, and auditions will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Auditions on Sunday, Jan. 14 are from 1 to 5 p.m.

Those who audition should bring sheet music and be prepared to sing 16 to 32 measures of a vocal selection from standard Broadway material, followed by a brief (less than one minute) monologue. During the afternoon, groups of 10 or more will be taught a tap dance combination to be performed as part of the audition.

Casting will be posted on Monday, Jan. 15.

Featuring songs by George and Ira Gershwin, "Crazy for You" is a tap dance musical about a young New York banker who goes west to Deadrock, Nev., to repossess a theater and ends up falling in love. Thirty-one roles are available, including several for mature actors. The show does not offer any children's roles. Director Steve Earnest is looking for strong singer/dancers, both male and female, and a number of character roles. All performers must sing, and there are no paid contracts available.

Rehearsals for principals will begin Jan. 19. Chorus rehearsals will begin full time on Feb. 27, with some basic preliminary staging and dance rehearsals in February.

"Crazy for You" runs April 11 to 15 in Wheelwright Auditorium. Jennifer Lent is the choreographer, and musical direction is by Aaron Michael McAllister. For more information, call (843) 349-6469 or e-mail searnest@coastal.edu.
