Oceanographer Cousteau to deliver Kimbel Lecture at CCU

Jean-Michel Cousteau comes to the CCU campus on Tuesday, Feb. 13 as the Kimbel Distinguished Lecturer for 2007.
Jean-Michel Cousteau, oceanographer, environmentalist and filmmaker, will be the featured speaker for Coastal Carolina University's Kimbel Distinguished Lecturer Series on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium.

The lecture is free and open to the public but tickets are required and may be picked up at the Wheelwright Box Office Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or 90 minutes prior to the lecture. There is a limit of two tickets per person.

"The Great Ocean Adventure" is Cousteau's topic, which continues the legacy of his father Jacques Cousteau, the legendary ocean explorer who died in 1997.

Jean-Michel Cousteau has been an explorer, environmentalist, educator and film-producer for more than 40 years. He founded the Ocean Futures Society, a marine conservation and education organization that serves as a "Voice for the Ocean." He also teaches conservation ethics, conducts research and helps to develop marine education programs.

Cousteau has produced more than 70 films, and his work has earned an Emmy award, the Peabody award, the 7 d'Or (the French equivalent of the Emmy), and the Cable ACE Award. He continues his quest to "carry forward the flame of his faith" and educates listeners worldwide on the importance of the oceans and preserving underwater ecosystems.

The purpose of the Kimbel Distinguished Lecturer Series is to present programs promoting an appreciation for the intellectual values in broad social issues, religion, geopolitics and the arts. Some of the previous Kimbel speakers have included Desmond Tutu, the South African archbishop and activist who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize; Carl Bernstein, one of the journalists who broke the Watergate story and won a Pulitzer for Public Service; and the late Howard K. Smith, the distinguished CBS correspondent and anchor.
