17 Academic Enhancement grants awarded at Coastal

Grants for 17 research proposals and academic enhancement projects submitted by Coastal Carolina University faculty have been approved through the Professional Enhancement Grants Program for the 2006-2007 academic year.

The program, sponsored by the Horry County Higher Education Commission, Coastal Educational Foundation and the Office of the Provost, is intended to encourage the development of projects that show potential for significant research, scholarly, creative or instructional contributions, and that can serve as the base to acquire additional funding from external sources.

The grants were awarded to:

• Daniel Abel, assistant professor of marine science, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, for his project, "Sharks of South Carolina Estuaries II," a comparison of Winyah Bay and Port Royal Sound.

• Dan Albergotti, assistant professor of English, Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, for research and drafting of poems for a second book-length manuscript.

• Maria Bachman, associate professor of English, Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, for her project about Wilkie Collins and the art of the short story.

• Erin Burge, assistant professor of marine science, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, for the identification and characterization of an Nramp, the natural resistance-associated macrophage protein, homolog, in the Eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica.

• Steve Bush, associate professor of biology, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, for examining the pollination biology of a tropical epiphytic orchid.

• Richard Costner, assistant professor of education, Spadoni College of Education, for the project "So, You Want to Teach in a Middle School?" to study the attitudes and perceptions of preservice middle school teachers.

• F. Eliza Glaze, assistant professor of history, Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, for her project titled "Gariopontus and the Salernitans: Continuity and Innovation in an Age of Revolutionary Medical Thought."

• Wendy Hood, assistant professor of biology, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, for a project researching if yellow and black coloration in male bluegill sunfish reflects feeding history.

• Bomi Kang, assistant professor of resort and tourism management, Wall College of Business, for exchange program development with Japanese institutions in conjunction with study abroad in Japan.

• Greg Martel, associate professor of exercise science, Spadoni College of Education, for the study of aging skeletal muscle and fighting the effects of Sarcopenia.

• Pamela Martin, assistant professor of politics, Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, for a project titled "Whose Rainforest is it Anyway?" The project will study the impacts of global organization and dialog on international petroleum development, human rights and environmental protection.

• Paul Olsen, professor of art, Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, for "Ashes2Art: Reconstruction of Greek Temples and Historical Sites."

• John Reilly, assistant professor of chemistry, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, to study the harvest and purification of the enzyme histidase from E. coli bacteria.

• Darlene Slusher, assistant professor of chemistry, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, for an investigation of local fine particulate matter.

• Holly Tankersley, assistant professor of politics, Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, for her project, "Follow the Leader: exploring national and state dimensions of policy change."

• Philip Whalen, assistant professor of history, Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, for his study of Burgundian Gastro-Tourism under Gaston Gerard.

• John Yannessa, assistant professor of health promotions, Spadoni College of Education, for his study of psychobiological correlates impacting fall risk among older adults.
