Coastal Carolina University chemistry professor John Reilly will give a talk titled "Knowledge at the Expense of Ethics - Has Science Gone too Far?" on Tuesday, April 3 at 6 p.m.

The discussion, part of The Jackson Family Center for Ethics and Values' Coffee and Ethics series, will take place at Panini 38, located in the Bi-Lo Shopping Center on 38 Avenue North and U.S. 17 Bypass in Myrtle Beach. The event is free and open to the public.

Reilly will address the questions: Do ethical principles override the drive to know and understand? If so, how should ethical values limit scientific inquiry? What role should ethics play in science, and have scientists already gone too far?

To examine the ethical limitations of science, Reilly will consider examples such as Josef Mengele's justification of his "medical experiments" in Auschwitz on the grounds that they provide new scientific knowledge.

Reilly earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the City College of New York in 1987 and his doctorate degree from John Hopkins University in 1993. Before joining the CCU faculty, he taught at Elon University.
