Summer Lifelong Learning at Coastal Carolina University
Learn how to stretch the retirement nest egg, play the piano instantly and explore the significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls. These and many other courses designed to meet the needs and interests of local residents are offered during day and evening hours.

Computer courses for absolute beginners and beyond are offered at the Conway campus and Waccamaw Center, plus half-day introductions to Windows, eBay, the Internet and e-mail, virus protection, as well as special purpose programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, digital photo processing, Web Design, QuickBooks) and an overview of electronic gadgetry.

CONWAY CAMPUS
Investing in Retirement: With people living longer than ever before, retirees face the challenge of stretching their retirement nest egg to last over that extended lifetime. Tues., June 5, $20.
Summer Jaunts with Julie: A series of nine summer outings for June and July with naturalist Julie Finlayson include: SC aquarium and sea turtle hospital, museums (state, racetrack, Fort Sumter, The Hunley), Walterboro artisans center, Wadmalaw tea plantation, Mepkin Abbey, Darlington racetrack, farmers' market, butterfly garden, and night sea turtle walks. Depart from the Conway campus and travel by van for a full day of adventure with planned and spontaneous stops, and of course, lunch in local eateries (extra). Tues., June 5-July 3, $35-45 each.
Beginning Acrylics: Review the basics of acrylics and how to use the different kinds of brushes and paints associated with painting acrylics. Learn the basics of mixing colors, working with textures, contrast, light and shadow. Mon.-Fri., June 11-15, $75.
Creative Writing: Everyone has a story - or stories - to tell. This course is designed to get them in print. Students will read their work in class and get constructive comments from fellow students and the instructor. Thurs., June 7-July 26, 4-6 p.m., $50.
The Power of Positive Thinking: Every person has to deal with jobs, family issues, sickness, finances, hurt, love, etc. One tool for overcoming life's obstacles is positive thinking. The instructor has traveled the U.S. and Canada with a team of motivational speakers to guide people in the daily application of this skill. Thurs., June 7-July 26, 6-8 p.m., $50.
Origins of the Bible: In this session the historical roots of the biblical accounts will be probed, their translation from oral through written tradition explored and the elements that have allowed them to endure for more than 2,000 years identified. Tues., June 12, 10 a.m.-noon, $20.
Music Reading for Total Beginners: Quickly learn all the basic reading skills you need for playing and reading music. You'll learn music theory and fundamentals of the keyboard. Designed for the complete beginner by the creator of the highly acclaimed "Instant Piano" workshop. Wed., June 13, 2-4 p.m., $30+.
Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People: Learn all the chords needed to play any pop song, any style and any key. If you can find middle C and know the meaning of Every Good Boy Does Fine, you already know enough to enroll in this workshop. Inspirational Writing on Waties Island: Spend a morning or evening surrounded by the pristine beauty of Waties Island while you explore its impact on your psyche and creativity under the guidance of one who knows the island well. Sat., June 16, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., $25.
Understanding the Dead Sea Scrolls: Since the original discovery in 1947, these writings have captured the imagination of millions around the world and have been called the most important archaeological find of the 20th century. In this lecture the events leading up to the writing of the scrolls will be reviewed along with details of the discovery and the beliefs of the writers of these revealing documents. Meet Your Guides and Be Guided: Each of us is endowed with at least one "guide," also known as a guardian angel. This workshop features exploration of the metaphysics of guardianship - how guides operate ("manifest") in our lives; why a particular guide is your guide. Mon., June 4, 3-6 p.m. and Sat., June 9, 9 a.m. to noon, $35.
Reveal the Message in Your Aura: In this workshop, your aura will be revealed and explained in a private interpretive session with Gloriana Miller. Sat., June 2, 9 a.m.-noon and Wed., June 6, 9 a.m.-noon, $45.

Starshine Performance Training: The ultimate course for anyone who wants to be a star. Learn to have confidence, be comfortable and to enjoy singing/acting/public speaking/karaoke/talent shows. The final class culminates with a "night club cabaret" performance. Ages 14 and up welcome. Wed., June 6-July 25, 3-5 p.m., $90; Thurs., June 7-July 26, 6-8 p.m., $90.
Gems and Jewelry: This six-week course will give a basic knowledge about gems and jewelry. Each student will be given a loupe to keep and use. Identification tips will be taught and practiced. Tues., June 12-July 24, 6-8 p.m., $45.
Acting for Film & Television: Based on the instructor's credit course in the CCU Theater Department, students learn practical acting techniques and how to market themselves for film and television. Practical exercises and work on camera will expose actors to performing on taped media. Students age 13 and older are encouraged to participate. Wed., June 13-July 25, $150.
Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People: This is a beginners class in chord piano techniques. Thurs., June 14, 1-:30 p.m., $50+.
America's Boating Course: The Georgetown Flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard will conduct this safe boating class for students age 13 and older. Topics will include: getting ready to go boating, required safety and emergency equipment, basic navigation, operating your boat safely, towing your boat, and what to do in an emergency, among others. Each student will receive a book, CD and certificate. Sat., June 16, $35.
How Music Shaped the Confederacy: Subtitled "Songs of Sentiment, Songs of Sorrow," this course will explore the music that was popular among Confederate soldiers, particularly the sentimental ballads, within the context of the question: What distinguished Southern from Northern cultural consciousness in the mid-19th century, and how were these differences revealed in the songs sung by soldiers during the Civil War? Thurs., June 21-July 12, 10-11:30 a.m., $40.
