Visiting professor to discuss world history from environmental perspective

Edmund "Terry" Burke III, a distinguished fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study, will give a talk titled "The Big Story, Human History, Energy Regimes and the Environment" on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. in the Wall Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by CCU's Honors Program, Globalist Club and History Club.

Burke, who is also director of the World History Center at the University of California at Santa Cruz, is a historian who specializes on topics such as colonialism, nationalism and social movements in the Middle East and North Africa. He has recently co-edited two collections of essays: "The Environment and World History" and "After the Colonial Turn: Essays on Orientalism, History, and Theory." He is also the editor of "Struggle and Survival in the Modern Middle East."

The Institute for Advanced Study, located in Princeton, N.J., is a leading center for theoretical and intellectual inquiry. The Institute encourages original, often speculative, thinking as a means of advancing knowledge and scholarship in a broad range of fields in the sciences and humanities.
