Coastal's English faculty to discuss literary topics

  Jason Ockert kicks off the "Up for Discussion" series at the Myrtle Beach Art Museum.  
Coastal Carolina University English faculty will discuss literary works in the "Up for Discussion" series at the Myrtle Beach Art Museum this semester. The series takes place Tuesday evenings each month through April from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

Featured speakers include:

* Tuesday, Jan. 29. Jason Ockert, fiction author of the short story collection, "Rabbit Punches," will read "Echo," his original short story that won the Atlantic Monthly national fiction contest. Ockert, who joined the CCU faculty last fall, has won numerous national fiction awards.

* Tuesday, Feb. 19. Professor Jill Sessoms will discuss the life and works of Southern author Jill McCorkle in the presentation entitled "Southern Illusions, Southern Realities: The Works of Jill McCorkle." McCorkle is scheduled to visit the CCU campus March 6 for a public reading.

* Tuesday, Mar. 25. Peter Lecouras, an associate professor and museum vice-chair ,will lead a discussion about Ernest Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms." Lecouras teaches Hemingway in his classes and has published journal articles on the author.

* Tuesday, Apr. 22. Poet Dan Albergotti, whose latest collection, "The Boatloads," won the 2007 A. Poulin Jr., Poetry Prize, will read from his work. The reading will be followed by a question-and-answer session and book signing.

All "Up for Discussion" literary events are free and open to the public. Space is limited so reservations are required. Call 843-238-2510.
