PEN AND PODIUM PRODUCTION PARODIES ANTHONY TRIAL
February 16, 2001
Coastal Carolina University’s second annual Pen and Podium
production, “The Trial of Susan B. Anthony,” will be presented March 5
and 6 at 10 a.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium in conjunction with the
university’s African-American Celebration. The event is free and open
to the public.
Written by Lee Bollinger, assistant professor of English at Coastal, the hour-long play is a parody of the trial of pioneer women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony, who was arrested after voting illegally in 1872.
The cast includes Coastal dramatic arts alumnus Allie Ruddell as Anthony; Edgar Dyer, professor of politics and geography, as the prosecuting attorney; Preston McKever-Floyd, senior instructor of philosophy and religion, as Frederick Douglass; dramatic arts major Tressie Williams as Sojourner Truth; interdisciplinary studies major Jason Wallace as the defense attorney; and Jack Flanders of information technology services as the judge.
