CCU percussion ensembles celebrate five years with concert

March 11, 2008

Coastal Carolina University students will present a concert of international percussion music on Friday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required.

The concert will feature Coastal's Stryke Taiko ensemble, Grand Strand Pans Steel Band, CCU Percussion Ensemble, the Pop Percussion Ensemble, CCU Stomp Ensemble, CCU Ragtime Ensemble, plus a surprise guest appearance. Kurry Seymour, director of percussion studies at Coastal, directs all ensembles. This concert celebrates the percussion department's fifth anniversary at CCU.

The Stryke Taiko Ensemble will demonstrate a classic Japanese performance art that combines martial arts and choreography with traditional Japanese drumming.

The Grand Strand Steel Band will play classical music and popular tunes; the group consists of music majors and non-majors in multiple styles of percussive music. The sound of the steel band is a trademark of the Caribbean.

The Percussion Ensemble and the Pop Percussion Ensemble will perform pieces ranging from traditional to contemporary, novelty to transcriptions, and marimba to full ensemble music.

For tickets call the Wheelwright Box Office at 349-2502.
