Summer Lifelong Learning at Coastal Carolina University
Designed as "learning for the joy of it," the courses afford opportunities for adults to explore areas of interest during the day and evening hours at several locations. Computer courses for beginners and beyond are offered at University Hall on the CCU main campus and at the Waccamaw Higher Education Center in Litchfield.
Of particular interest to residents and newcomers to the area, "The History of Georgetown," taught by Robin McCall, will be held at the Georgetown Higher Education Center on 1273 North Fraser Street, in Georgetown, on Mondays, 10 a.m. to noon, June 16 to July 21. Other topics include religion, plantations and rivers, the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, "breaking news," and interesting faces and places through classroom presentations and field trips. The fee is $45.
CONWAY CAMPUS
Watercolor Painting: Individualized instruction of color mixing, technique, design, composition and methods will meet the needs of artists at any level, from beginner to advanced. Students and the instructor will critique demos, in-class projects and homework assignments, and new techniques will be explored. Monday, June 16 to Monday, July 21 from 9:30 a.m. to noon, $75+.
Academy of Gardening: The academy meets each week with a master gardener for a discussion of various topics. Seed germination, propagation, container gardening, seasonal planting, growing herbs and spices, and rose gardens are some of the learning experiences Field trips to local gardens and nurseries, plant swapping and campus gardening are all part of the course. Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m., $30/year.
Creative Writing: Everyone has a story - or stories - to tell. This course is designed to find every person's story and get it into print. Writing prompts, positive critiques and constructive criticism are a part of the course and will encourage creativity. Tuesday, June 10 to Tuesday, July 29 from 6 to 8 p.m., $50.

WACCAMAW HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER
Art History: Cave Drawings to the 20th Century: This art history course will touch on highlights from the cave era to the 20th century. Students will explore the high points and influences of each era and discuss various artists and their contributions to art. Tuesday, June 3 to Tuesday, July 22 from 10 a.m. to noon, $50.
Introduction to Palette Knife Oil Painting: An excellent tool for producing textured, sweeping areas of flat color, as well as tiny shapes of color, the palette knife is akin to spreading butter or jam on bread and produces quite a different result than that of a brush. Students will explore different techniques and a supply list is available upon registration. Thursday, June 19 to July 24 from 2 to 5 p.m., $100+.
Beginning Photoshop for Photographers: This workshop serves two purposes: to help students become more proficient with their image editing software, and to allow students to experience the world of digital editing before investing in it. Course activity will include working with Adobe Photoshop CS3, Photoshop Elements 6 and Adobe LightRoom. Students will explore numerous aspects of photo editing including image capturing, image transferring to computer, shadowing, color balance, contrast, cropping, sizing, sharpening, printing and archiving. Monday, July 7 to Tuesday, July 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or Monday, July 7 to Thursday, July 10 from 6 to 9 p.m., $150.
Summering in Pawleys in 1850: Learn the who, what, where and why of Pawleys Island, the oldest resort on the Eastern Atlantic coast whose heyday was the 1850s. Class presentations and field trips. Wednesdays, June 18 to July 23, 10 a.m. to noon, $45.
The History of Latin America: A native Latin American reviews the discovery of a new continent: America. The life and legacy of Christopher Columbus. The rivalries of the rising European superpowers in the 16th century: the British in the North and the Spaniards and Portuguese in the South. The fall of the Aztecs and Mayas in Mexico and Incas in Peru. The colonization of Latin America. First stirrings of independence in the 1800s: Bolivar in the North, San Martin in the South. The immigration in the 19th and 20th centuries. Latin America and the USA in the 1900s: interventions, Juntas, dictatorships, and return to democracy. Wednesdays, June 4 to June 25, 1 to 2:30 p.m., $45.
The '60s & '70s in Latin American Film: Four weekly sessions will cover four controversial movies which show the turbulent 1960s and '70s in Latin America in its search for democracy. The movies that will be shown include "Diary of a Motorcyclist," "The Official Story," "Paloma de Papel" and "Missing." Before each session, the instructor, Susana Russell, will introduce the theme of the movie; exchange of opinions after each movie is welcome. Tuesdays, June 3 to 24 from 2 to 4:30 p.m., $45.
Courage to Lead: The Intersection of Soul & Role: A different approach to leadership development, rooted in the belief that effective leadership flows from the identity and integrity of the individual. Through this process grounded in what Parker J. Palmer calls leadership formation, participants reflect on how their selfhood affects the way they relate to colleagues, their leadership tasks, their organization and the world. Opportunities for large group, small group and individual reflection will be available for exploring leadership and life questions, using personal stories, poetry and literature from diverse wisdom traditions. Sally Z. Hare, a CCU Distinguished Professor Emerita, has been leading this work nationally for the past decade. Monday, June 23 to Thursday, June 26 from 1 to 4 p.m., $200.
