Education textbook by CCU professors focuses on student motivation and management

May 7, 2008

Two veteran Coastal Carolina University education professors have issued a new edition of their textbook for K-12 teachers. "Best Practice in Motivation and Management in the Classroom," by Dennis G. Wiseman and Gilbert H. Hunt, was recently published by Charles C. Thomas Publishers in Springfield, Ill.

The goal of the book is to offer today's K-12 teachers practical techniques that will help them increase their effectiveness in the classroom. The authors focus on student motivation and classroom management, two areas that are crucial to maintaining effective educational environments.

"The book reviews appropriate strategies when responding to specific types of student misbehavior and also discusses zero tolerance policies, expulsion, teaching special students, addressing diversity, violence, school uniforms and drug abuse as related to management and motivation," says Wiseman, director of CCU's Biddle Center for Teaching and Learning in the Spadoni College of Education.

Teachers today are under unprecedented stress, according to Gil Hunt, dean of Coastal's Spadoni College of Education. "The demand for higher levels of performance and accountability comes at a time when the challenges teachers face each day in their schools and classrooms are greater than at any previous time in the history of the teaching profession," he said.

The book is designed both for new as well as experienced teachers.
