Poet/fiddler Doug Van Gundy to perform this week

Poet/fiddler Doug Van Gundy will have a reading at Coastal Carolina University on Wednesday, May 21 at 2:30 p.m. as the final session of the 2007-08 Words to Say It Series. The event, which will be held in Wall Auditorium, is free and open to the public. A reception and book signing will follow the reading.

The author of "A Life Above Water," Gundy has been an elephant keeper, a copywriter, a country radio disk jockey, a letterpress operator, an old-time fiddler and a television game show winner. He holds an MFA in poetry from Goddard College and teaches English at the Caperton Center of Fairmont State University in Clarksburg, W.Va. His poems and essays have appeared in such journals as Ecotone, The Lullwater Review, The Fretboard Journal and Kestrel. His first book of poems, "A Life Above Water," was published in 2007 by Red Hen Press.

Gundy is also an accomplished old-time musician, specializing in the fiddle and banjo, and has performed widely at festivals and other venues, including the New Bedford Folk Festival and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
