June 23, 2008

Coastal Carolina University presents the 2008 Summer Arts Academy Exhibit on Wednesday, June 25 at the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The event, featuring the original work of 50 middle and high school students from Horry County, is free and open to the public.

The exhibition will feature more than 200 works of art, a culmination of the Summer Arts Academy's 11-day workshop on the visual arts, directed by Susan Slavik, professor of visual arts at Coastal Carolina University and 2005 Art Educator of the Year.

The 7th- through 12th-grade participants were taught skills in visual communication, portfolio development and the manipulation of two and three-dimensional media. Classes included drawing, portraiture, painting, scratch art, collage, altered books, personal journals, art dolls, batik, sculpture, photography, printmaking and graphic design.

Twenty-six classes were taught by 16 instructors including Coastal Carolina University faculty, professional artists and other art educators.

The gallery is located in the University's Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. For more information, call 349-2735.
