Lee Brockington

"Landscape of Slavery: the Plantation in American Art," a noncredit course, is being offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Coastal Carolina University on Tuesday, July 8 and Tuesday, July 15.

Lee Brockington, local historian, writer and interpreter, will conduct the workshop on July 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a lecture at Hobcaw Barony. On Tuesday, July 15 the workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will include a field trip to the Gibbes Museum in Charleston.

Brockington will explore themes of wealth, power, race, memory, nostalgia and conflict through images of plantation life slavery in art. The Gibbes Museum of Charleston has created an exhibit and book on plantation art by its director, Angela Mack.

Brockington is the author of two books, "Pawleys Island: Stories from the Porch" and "Plantation Between the Waters: A Brief History of Hobcaw Barony." Her third book, "Pawleys Island: A Century of History and Photographs," will be released on Sept. 5.
