Economic Growth Summit by S.C. and N.C. universities to focus on regional and global economy
The conference, sponsored by BB&T and The Sun News, will be held Friday, Aug. 8 from 9:15 a.m. to noon at the Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required.
"This unprecedented gathering of business leaders from North and South Carolina provides a rare opportunity to strengthen business strategies for regional growth," said David A. DeCenzo, president of Coastal Carolina University.
The title of Allison's talk is "The Global Economic Context." Also speaking are Don Schunk, research economist with the Wall College of Business's BB&T Center for Economic and Community Development; and Woody Hall, senior economist at UNCW's Center for Business and Economic Services.
Allison, a native of Charlotte, joined BB&T in 1971. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and earned an MBA from Duke University. He became president of BB&T in 1987 and was elected chairman and CEO in July 1989. Under his leadership, BB&T Corporation, headquartered in Winston-Salem, has become one of the largest holding companies in the nation, with $136.5 billion in assets. Its subsidiaries operate approximately 1,500 financial centers in the Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia, Maryland, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Indiana and Washington, D.C.
Schunk is one of South Carolina's leading economists. He joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty in 2007 and publishes monthly economic reports analyzing local, state and national trends.
Hall is the senior economist in UNCW's Center for Business and Economic Services. He has served as editor of the Carolina Coastal Business Review and as director of UNCW's Office of Economic Development and Forecasting.
