Johnson named Associate Provost at Coastal Carolina University

Richard L. Johnson was recently appointed to the position of Associate Provost for Graduate Studies and Academic Outreach at Coastal Carolina University.

His duties, in addition to graduate studies, will include responsibility for the Academic Testing Center, Lifelong Learning, the Scholars Academy and Summer School enrollments.

Johnson, professor and former chair of the Department of Music, joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty in 2006. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in music education from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign and a doctorate degree in conducting from Michigan State University.

As an administrator at Salisbury University (1988-2006), Johnson also served as chair of the University Curriculum Committee and as a member of the University Graduate Council. He has been on University Long Range Planning Committees for Middle States Commission on Higher Education assessment. He is past president of Maryland Council of Higher Education in Music, past president of the College Music Educators Society for Music Teacher Education and past member of Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA). He was also faculty adviser to the Maryland Higher Education Council and the State Arts Council for the Maryland Department of Economic and Employment Development.

Other areas of expertise include aesthetic education, philosophy of aesthetics, performance practices, arts education, conducting and the history of music.
