Campbell training in China before Aug. 17 qualifying

Coastal Carolina University alumna and Olympic hopeful Amber Campbell will compete for the U.S. in the women's hammer throw Sunday, with the qualifying rounds beginning at 9:20 p.m. Between 12 and 20 athletes will advance to the finals.The finals are at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20. (These dates and times are U.S. Eastern time, which differs from Beijing time.)..

Women's Track & Field Coach Alan Connie, who worked with Campbell during her time at the University, said the hammer event can be viewed live on NBColympics.com on Wednesday morning. Clock on TV online schedule, then track, then the hammer event.

Campbell arrived in China Friday, Aug. 8. She is staying at a training camp near Beijing practicing for the hammer throw competition in the XXIX Olympiad as a member of the U.S. Olympic Track and Field team.

"My practices have been great," writes Campbell on her blog (ambercampbelthrows.blogspot.com).

"Thanks again for all the support that everybody has been sending to me and my family," she writes. "Keep them coming as we are heading into the home stretch."

The 27-year-old Coastal Carolina University graduate was a five-time NCAA All-American in the hammer and weight throws. In 2004, her distance of 22.24 meters in the indoor weight throw set an all-time American Collegiate record. In addition to being named the Big South Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Year her last three seasons, Campbell won 16 individual conference titles in the indoor weight throw and shot put, the outdoor shot put, hammer throw and discus.

After college, Campbell received the Bronze Medal at the 2004 Olympic Trials, was the 2005 and 2006 USA Indoor runner-up, won the 2007 Penn Relays and won the 2007 and 2008 USA Indoor Championship.

She currently volunteers as an assistant track coach at the University and works for Sports Doctors Inc. in Myrtle Beach. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University in 2004.
