August 20, 2008

Coastal Carolina University begins classes Wednesday, Aug. 20, with an estimated 1,700 new students on campus.

Projected total fall enrollment is 8,200 to 8,300 students, a 4 to 5 percent increase over last year, according to Judy Vogt, vice president of enrollment services. Transfer enrollment is also up 3 percent over last fall.

About 40 new faculty members have been added to meet the growing enrollment and keep student-professor ratios small.

Renovation of Kimbel Library and the Lib Jackson Student Center, expansion of the Smith Science Center and adding an additional parking lot near the residence halls are projects either under way or expected to begin soon.

The most popular majors with new freshmen and transfers are marine science, biology, management, marketing, psychology and accounting.

New majors with great growth for new students are musical theater, communication and exercise and sport management.
