Coastal Carolina University faculty present 'Romantic Lieder'

"An Afternoon of Romantic Lieder" featuring pianist Philip Powell and baritone Jeffrey Jones will be presented at Coastal Carolina University on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 4 p.m. The event is free but ticketed.

The recital will be held in the Recital Hall of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Tickets may be obtained during the week at Wheelwright Box Office or prior to the concert at the door.

The program will feature Powell and Jones performing a selection of romantic songs (or "lieder"), both well known and obscure, from the works of Clara and Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms (a protégé of the Schumanns) and Richard Strauss. Included are the famous song cycle "A Poet's Love" (Schumann) and the "Four Serious Songs" by Brahms, which were composed near the end of his life.

Powell, associate professor of music, has been a faculty member at Coastal Carolina University since 1988. Since moving to South Carolina, he has maintained an active performing schedule with concerts frequently heard on South Carolina Public Radio. He has served as president of the Coastal Concert Association, music director of the Festival of Music and Art at Pawleys Island, founding director of the Musicale de Geneve series and a member of the board of directors of the Long Bay Symphony. Locally, Powell has performed with the South Carolina Symphony Orchestra, the Jupiter Symphony and is a frequent soloist with the Long Bay Symphony. Powell earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma and a master's degree and doctorate of music from Indiana University, where he was a student of Michel Block.

Jones, assistant professor of music, is a native of Springfield, Mo. He taught at Grand Canyon University and the Arizona State University. He earned a master's degree in opera performance and a doctorate in vocal performance at Arizona State. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of North Texas and is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts.

Academy. He has performed with many opera companies, including the Arizona Opera, Arizona State Lyric Opera Theater, Atlanta Lyric Opera, Capitol City Opera, Atlanta Symphony Chorus, Atlanta Symphony Chamber Chorus, Robert Shaw Chamber Singers, the Phoenix Bach Choir, Camerata Singers (at Idaho State University), Collegium Vocale, Meridian Chorale and the Italian Connection.
