'Tribute to Jazz at the Philharmonic' set for Friday

  Dan O'Reilly
Coastal Carolina University's Department of Music presents "A Tribute to Jazz at the Philharmonic" featuring 13 jazz musicians of the Grand Strand on Friday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium.

"We have some really great jazz musicians in this town," says Dan O'Reilly, organizer and director of the concert. "This is an opportunity to get them together on one stage and bring the various (jazz) audiences together and let them enjoy all the wonderful musicians we have locally."

The event is designed as a unique homage to the legendary series of jazz performances that took place in the 1940s and 1950s at Philharmonic Auditorium in Los Angeles. The original concert/jam sessions were organized by Norman Granz, founder of Verve Records.

Musicians include saxophonist O'Reilly, who teaches music at the University, Benny Hill on saxophone, Bernie Kenerson on saxophone, James "Bull" Canty on trumpet, William Hamilton on piano, Judy Duva on piano, Denny Hess on bass, Reggie Sullivan on bass, Arlin Strader on drums, Kurry Seymour on drums, Sam Favata on guitar, Kerry Martin on vocals and Lisa O'Reilly on vocals.

The program features songs from the era, such as "How High the Moon," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" and "Sweet Georgia Brown," among others.

Tickets are $15 and $20, with discounts for students, seniors, teens and children. Call the Wheelwright Box Office at 843-349-2502 for reservations and information.
