Coastal Carolina University Steel Band to perform

Coastal Carolina will present a benefit concert on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium, featuring the Coastal Carolina University Steel Band.

The concert celebrates the University Steel Band's first professional recording, titled "something to say, from the neck down." All proceeds from ticket sales and purchase of the CDs will be donated to the Jim Tully family. Tully, who is director of bands at Coastal Carolina University, has a daughter who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Tickets are $9 general admission; seniors and alumni, $7; Coastal Carolina University and Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) students, one free ticket per valid ID; Coastal Carolina University and HGTC faculty and staff, two free tickets per valid ID; teens and children, free with ticket.

The program will feature the Coastal Carolina University Steel Band in a concert featuring sounds and instruments of the Americas, Caribbean Islands and Africa. Special guests will include Coastal Carolina University artist-in-residence and acclaimed bassist Steve Bailey, University music alumnus Andrew Brought, and two steel bands from the Charleston area.

The concert is directed by Kurry Seymour, director of percussion studies at Coastal Carolina University, who also instructs the percussion studio, percussion methods, the Spirit of the Chanticleer percussion section, and the Epiphany indoor percussion ensemble. Seymour was also the percussion coordinator for the Sudler Award-winning West Virginia University Marching Band from 1997 to 2001.
