Coastal Carolina University names drum majors

December 15, 2008

Three Coastal Carolina University band members -- Amanda Huntington, Khawon Jerrel Porter and Victoria Thom -- have been selected as drum majors for the Spirit of the Chanticleer Marching Band for fall 2009.

Huntington, a junior music major from Fort Mill, is returning for the second year. She served as drum major this past fall and was previously drum major for the Fort Mill High School Band, where she consistently won outstanding drum major awards at marching competitions. At the University, she is a member of numerous groups, including the Coastal Carolina University Symphonic Band.

Khawon Jerrel Porter, of Wilmington, N.C., a member of Spirit's percussion section, is a first-time drum major. He is a student in the Bridge Program administered jointly by Coastal Carolina University and Horry-Georgetown Technical College and will enroll at the University as a music education major in fall 2009. He served as the drum major of New Hanover High School Marching Wildcats in 2007-2008, where he earned outstanding drum major awards in the AAA division of the 10th Annual White Oak Band Classic.

Victoria Thom of Myrtle Beach will serve as alternate drum major. She was a Spirit drum major in fall 2008 and will be a music major next year. She was previously drum major of the Carolina Forest High School band, where she was recipient of many drum major awards.

The Coastal Carolina University drum majors are responsible for leading the band in performance on the field. They are chosen for their musical abilities, leadership qualities, attitude and passion for the sport. The drum major is the highest ranked band participant, responsible for helping with instruction during rehearsals and boosting the excitement of fellow students.
