Stegall concert spotlights music of Spain, Schubert

  Gary Stegall
Coastal Carolina University music professor Gary Stegall will give a piano recital with a double focus, "Piano Music of Spain/Music of Schubert," at 7:30 p.m. April 4 in Wheelwright Auditorium. Admission is free, but tickets are required.

The first part of the program will feature selections by 18th and 19th century Spanish composers, including Isaac Albéniz ("Evocatión" from "Iberia"), Enrique Granados ("Maiden and the Nightingale") and Federico Mompou ("Canción y Danza" 1 and 6).

The second half of the program will be devoted to Franz Schubert's "Sonata in B Flat Major." The work is one of Schubert's last compositions, finished shortly before his death at age 31 in 1828, but not published until 1839.

Stegall, a professor of music at Coastal, is highly regarded both as a soloist and chamber musician, and has performed throughout the world. He has appeared with many orchestras including the Los Angeles Solo Repertory Orchestra, the Chestnut Hill Orchestra of Philadelphia, the Charleston Symphony, the Long Bay Symphony and others. As organist, he has performed by special invitation at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. He received the Diplômé/Prix d'excellence avec grande distinction from the Boitsfort Academy of Music in Brussels, Belgium. Stegall earned a D.M.A. degree from the University of Maryland.

Tickets may be picked up at the Wheelwright Box Office Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., or 30 minutes prior to the performance. For more information, call 843-349-2502.
