Summer Lifelong Learning at Coastal Carolina University

May 1, 2009

Registration is now under way for nearly 80 courses offered this summer by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Coastal Carolina University.

Some 30 classes are available at the Foundation Center on U.S. 501 in Conway and another 50 are being offered at the Waccamaw Higher Education Center in Litchfield.

Art courses cover basic drawing, figure drawing, soft pastels, watercolors and oil painting. A number of workshops on fused glass are open to adults and younger artists to create pendant/earring sets, photo frames, Christmas ornaments and platters.

A complete range of computer classes from beginning users to advanced internet research users is planned, using University desktop computers as well as students' personal laptops.

Mary Ginny DuBose's course on the "Grotesque and Comical World of Flannery O'Connor" will explore the Southern writer's short stories, while Richard Lutman's "Writer's Boot Camp" leads students to create their own story in a four-week workshop. In addition, Al Perry offers a memoir writing course and an overview of publishing payoffs and pitfalls.

Two history courses complement each other: "Summering in Pawleys in the 1850s" and "How Music Shaped the Confederacy." Five additional music courses will teach students to strengthen their own talents.

Spend your summer learning to play the piano, guitar or bass, or practicing your vocal talents and improving your confidence before an audience in "Starshine Performance Training." These hands-on music courses are open to students 13 and older for a rewarding intergenerational experience. Three summer day camps of Starshine under the direction of JoEllen Langley are planned for middle school and high school students, providing week-long intensive training for voice, acting and instruments.

Bring your children or grandchildren to "A Grand Introduction to Opera." These single-session showings of "Hansel and Gretel" on June 17 and "The Magic Flute" on July 15, hosted by Rita Martino, may lead your young people to a lifelong appreciation for opera.

The category of Personal Growth and Development includes a variety of unique courses, including yoga, living a healthy life, detoxifying and cleansing your body, mind and spirit, de-cluttering your home, eco-friendly choices, dream interpretation and Jungian tarot reading.

For career development, grant writing for nonprofits and community organizations is being offered.
