Student qualifies for U.S. Amateur tournament

August 12, 2009

A student in Coastal Carolina University's PGA Golf Management Program recently qualified for the U.S. Amateur championship and will compete with 312 players in the national tournament in late August.

The third time was a charm for Steve Delmar, a junior from Gaithersburg, Md., who missed qualifying last year by a single stroke and finished six strokes shy of the qualifying number in 2007. The tournament is played the week of Aug. 24 to 30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

To qualify, 21-year-old Delmar fired a 5-under par 139 through 36 difficult holes in 90-degree heat at Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley, Md. He finished second in a field of 78 to capture one of three berths.

Delmar is currently an intern at Columbia Country Club in Maryland. A star baseball player at Gaithersburg High, Delmar won the Washington Golf Association's Dewey Ricketts Memorial in 2006 and was a runner-up in the Maryland Amateur last summer.

He is in his third year of the University's PGA Golf Management Program, a four-and-one-half year program for aspiring PGA professionals.
