"The Art of Drawing" opens Thursday, Sept. 10 and continues through Friday, Oct. 16 in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery at Coastal Carolina University. An opening reception will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

The exhibition takes its title from the classic drawing text, "The Art of Drawing" by American artist and educator Bernard Chaet. It focuses on the continued relevance of drawing from observation for the contemporary artist. Archival student drawings from Yale University, personally selected by Chaet, will be on view. Current work by Chaet and former students, John Hull, chair of the Studio Art Department at the College of Charleston, and the late Michael Mazur, an internationally exhibited printmaker, painter and educator, will also be shown.

Visitors will view more than 100 works that highlight the process and immediacy of drawing. Emphasis is placed on the direct translation of the artist's unique vision through the medium of drawing.

Chaet is the William Leffingwell Professor of Painting Emeritus at Yale University School of Art. Born in Boston in 1924, he studied at Boston's School of the Museum of Fine Arts from 1942 to 1945. He earned a bachelor's degree from Tufts University and an honorary degree of fine arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art. He taught at Yale from 1951 to 1990, and his honors include a National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities grant (1967-68) and a Distinguished Teaching of Art Award, College Art Association (1986). Chaet's paintings have been the subject of recent exhibitions at David Findlay Jr. Fine Art in New York and the Alpha Gallery in Boston, among others. His work is on display in numerous museums, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Chaet lives in New Haven, Conn.

All Bryan Gallery programs are free and open to the public. The gallery is located on the first floor of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts building in room 129. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed weekends and University holidays. The gallery is accessible to persons with disabilities. Free parking is available.
