Atlantic Stage to host open house at Myrtle Beach Education Center
An Oct. 3 Open House is planned from 2 to 5 p.m. to show off the newly-renovated theater at the center. It is free and open to the public.
Atlantic Stage is an ensemble of professional resident artists committed to artistic excellence, community enrichment and educational outreach. The company was formed in 2008 by a group of theatre artists working at Coastal Carolina University and regionally. Thirteen of the 14 members are affiliated with or work at the University.
"We are committed to bringing you the best in Broadway, Off-Broadway, classical and new plays from regional theatre across America," said John Woodson, artistic director of the troupe who spent the summer and fall planning, building and planting in preparation for the first season.
The 145-seat auditorium surrounds the stage on three sides, immersing the audience in the experience of the production.
Four plays are planned for the 2009-2010 season, beginning with "Proof" by David Auburn, running Nov. 5 through 22. Subscription packages are available, as are single ticket options.
"Proof," a 2001 Pulitzer Prize winner and the Tony Award for Best Play, is about a young woman who quits college to care for her father in his final days. Over a volatile weekend, she deals with her own volatile emotions, a romantic possibility, the discovery of a mysterious notebook and her fears that she might inherit her father's madness.
"Santaland Diaries" by David Sedaris and adapted by Joe Mantello opens Dec. 2 and runs through Dec. 19. The play is the humorist's hilarious account of working at Macy's as a Yuletide elf.
"Almost, Maine" by John Cariani will be performed March 10-27. The residents of mythical Almost, Maine, find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often humorous ways.
"Eleemosynary" by Lee Blessing will be produced April 28 to May 15. This masterful play examines the subtle and often perilous relationship between three remarkable women: a young girl, her mother and her grandmother.
