Pamela Martin, associate professor of politics and international relations at Coastal Carolina University, will give a talk titled “Global Climate Change Politics Beyond the Kyoto Protocol: A View from the Rainforest Canopy,” on Wednesday, March 3 at 7 p.m. at the Waccamaw Higher Education Center in Litchfield. The event is free and open to the public.

The talk is a part of the “Culture and Crisis” community dialogue series led by University faculty. The series is sponsored annually by the Board of Visitors of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

Martin’s talk analyzes the current global climate change regime of the Kyoto Protocol, in effect until 2012, and discusses future global climate change policies. As the world struggles with how to resolve the increasing need for energy and the ultimate destruction of the planet, Ecuador and other developing countries are proposing innovative solutions. This discussion examines the Yasuní-ITT Initiative, an innovative plan to combat global climate change and decrease carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere while protecting the Amazon basin.

Martin is the director of the International and Global Studies minor at the University. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. Martin previously taught at La Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador. Her research and writing have focused on social movements, globalization and private authority in the international system. Martin is currently writing on the rainforest, oil extraction and conservation movements.
